Black women report using hair relaxers more frequently and at younger ages than women of other races. Unfortunately, a recent study indicates that this beauty decision is putting them at a significantly higher risk of developing uterine and other reproductive cancers.
For decades, companies have led women to believe that chemical hair relaxers are just as safe as any other haircare product. Since chemical hair straighteners sat alongside everyday shampoos or hair dyes on shelves in stores and salons readily offered them to customers, most consumers never questioned their safety.
Although manufacturers have marketed chemical hair straighteners as harmless, a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shattered this notion in October 2022. The research suggested that women who used chemical hair straightening products were at a higher risk for uterine cancer, possibly due to harmful chemical ingredients. Not only can these chemicals contribute to uterine cancer in women, but they may also lead to ovarian and endometrial cancer.
“This is a very scary time right now for women who have used chemical hair relaxers,” explains Kaitlyn Neufeld, The Lake Law Firm’s leading mass tort attorney. “They had no idea about what they were using on their bodies through no fault of their own, but because of these companies they trusted.”
These cancers can take an immense emotional and physical toll on victims, as some must undergo partial or complete hysterectomies, leaving them unable to have children. The Lake Law Firm is supporting individuals in filing lawsuits to recover compensation for the long-lasting ramifications of chemical hair straighteners, including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses.
Chemical hair relaxer lawsuits allege companies have targeted Black women through predatory marketing tactics, pushing the perceived benefits of straighter hair while profiting from hair discrimination. Plaintiffs hope to protect the next generation of consumers from the harmful chemicals in hair relaxers by sending a message to the industry through their lawsuits.
