Sally Field just made a bold confession about starring in The Flying Nun.
During the August 8 episode of NPR’s Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! podcast, the actress opened up about hesitating to join the fantasy sitcom series. In the show, Field played Sister Bertrille, a nun who could fly with the help of winds catching her wing-like religious headwear.
“I didn’t want to do The Flying Nun,” she confessed. “I was, like, 18, 19 years old. Now, I don’t want to be a nun. It was the ’60s. Everybody was eating granola, and taking their clothes off, and doing all sorts of things that I wasn’t doing.”
Additionally, Field revealed that she was not a fan of the flying part of her role. “I would have rather just been a nun with my feet on the ground,” she declared. “Because that was scary, and painful, and stupid.”
She explained, “It was painful because it was still the ’60s, and they hadn’t really upgraded how you can do this. There was no special effects. So it was wires. I had this harness with wires coming out of the habit.”
Field continued, “I was on a 50-foot crane some of the times, and they would fly me into the side of a building. And I’m like Spider-Man. I’m like, trying to, like, go, ‘Oh boy, here comes the building.’ And it was not something I should be doing, you know?
Recently, Field also admitted that starring in The Flying Nun made her “unemployable” for a bit — and credited Jack Nicholson for stepping in to change her trajectory.
The Flying Nun aired for three seasons from 1967 to 1970. In addition to Field, the sitcom featured Marge Redmond, Madeleine Sherwood, Alejandro Rey, Shelley Morrison, and Linda Dangcil, among others.
