    What To Know

    • Dylan Dreyer was absent from NBC’s Today this week while out on assignment.
    • She reported live from Alaska on Thursday, August 14, to share a segment about how cruise lines are working with marine conservationists to protect humpback whales.
    • Dreyer shared several picturesque snaps from her work trip via social media.

Dylan Dreyer spent the week away from Studio 1A for a fun and important reason.

The meteorologist was absent from this week’s episodes of Today, as she was out on assignment for the NBC show. Dreyer shared that assignment while reporting live from Ketchikan, Alaska, on Thursday, August 13.

“It is so easy to understand why it is ideal to travel to Alaska this time of year. … More than 500 humpback whales visit Southeast Alaska every summer, and there’s nothing quite like seeing these incredible animals in the wild,” Dreyer told her colleagues on the third hour of Today. “We headed out on the water to experience them firsthand, and to learn how the cruise industry is protecting these whales through marine conservation efforts.”

What followed was a video package about Dreyer’s Alaska trip, during which she chatted with a marine mammal scientist working with MSC Cruises to investigate whale “vessel strikes” in U.S. waters, with the end goal of helping ship crews better navigate sailing alongside whales.

In the segment, Dreyer was amazed after spotting whales during a scenic whale-watching trip. “That was all our footage. That was the whale we were kind of spotting for hours at a time,” Dreyer said of the package. “And once we were done, the whale swam away with us. So, it was like it was meant to be.”

After the show, Dreyer took to Instagram to share several picturesque snaps from her Alaska visit. “What an absolutely magical experience in Ketchikan, Alaska. When work friends are your actual friends, it makes it that much more special!” she wrote. “I learned so much about humpback whales and the research by @team_orca_ in conjunction with @msccruisesofficial is so important in keeping them safe. Hope you caught my spot on @todayshow this morning! Thanks for trusting me with this story!!”

The post’s slides featured photos of Dreyer and her Today crew enjoying a scenic hike, setting up their filming location in front of a beautiful marina backdrop, and taking in the sights on their whale-watching trip. Dreyer also posed for a pic with two fans holding Sunday Today mugs.

“I bet they really had to twist your arm to go on that assignment,” one fan quipped in the post’s comments. Another added, “Took my 8 year old son on an Alaskan cruise in June. Loved Ketchikan and the Deadliest Crab boat tour. Highly recommend visiting Alaska!”

Someone else shared, “Glad you all got to visit AK. There are soooo many more places to visit in AK that are just as magical or more. Come again.” A different person posted, “Such beautiful part of our country!! Enjoyed it a few years ago!!” A separate commenter stated, “I did and it was fabulous! Ketchikan was my favorite part of Alaska and I relived my visit through you, thank you.”
