Rachel Maddow Explains How Trump Is Wrecking Republicans’ Election Chances

    What To Know

    • Rachel Maddow said President Trump’s “emotionally incontinent” behavior is hindering the Republican Party.
    • She claimed Trump has lost his ability to communicate and strategize politically.
    • Maddow asserted that Trump’s actions are a major obstacle to Republicans at the midterms.

MS NOW anchor Rachel Maddow said on Wednesday (July 15) that the Republican Party is struggling to make headway in the upcoming midterm elections because President Donald Trump is “emotionally incontinent.”

Appearing on Wednesday’s edition of Deadline: White House, Maddow spoke with fellow MS NOW host Nicolle Wallace about how much of a “mess” the Republican Party is in right now. She said the biggest reason for this messiness is that Trump has “devolved in his own ability to communicate.”

Maddow told Wallace that not only can the president no longer “find the words that are supposed to go together to make the nouns” but that he also “can’t form a political concept,” per The Huffington Post.

As an example, the veteran journalist pointed to Trump’s recent attempts to tank the new housing legislation. “Republicans want one concrete thing to run on [in the midterms] that’s not taking away everybody’s health insurance,” Maddow explained. “Trump realizes, ‘Wait a second, that’s not about me,’ and so therefore he has to get rid of it.”

Maddow acknowledged that once upon a time, Trump could be “a little strategic,” but argued that he’s now become “so emotionally incontinent that he can’t control his own feelings enough to make politically savvy decisions.”

And because of Trump’s emotional behavior, she said Republicans have been forced to “make politics around him rather than through him, like they used to be able to do.” She added, “[Trump is] the biggest bulwark between them and potential electoral success in November.”

The fast-approaching midterm elections have Democrats feeling hopeful about a potential “blue wave,” something even staunch Republicans believe is possible. Maddow said it’s up to Republicans to solve the Trump problem if they want to turn things around before polling opens.

“They have to figure out how to contend with that,” she stated, “and I think that’s why they’re such a mess right now.”
