Brenda Fricker, the veteran Irish actress who won an Oscar for her performance in My Left Foot and portrayed the beloved “pigeon lady” in Home Alone 2, has died. She was 81.
Her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed Fricker died after a period of ill health. “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” he told the U.S. Sun on Friday (July 17). “I was honoured to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”
Born on February 17, 1945, in Dublin, Ireland, Fricker began her career as an assistant to the art editor at the Irish Times, with the hope of becoming a reporter. However, at 19, she found herself pursuing an acting career, with a small, uncredited part in the 1964 film Of Human Bondage.
Some of her early roles included appearances in the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street and later the hospital drama Casualty, where she played nurse Megan Roach. After leaving Casualty in 1990, Fricker would go on to find international acclaim for her role as Christy Brown’s (Daniel Day-Lewis) mother in My Left Foot.

The performance earned Fricker an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award, and she won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress.
After her Oscar win, Fricker went on to appear in several mainstream movies, including The Field, So I Married an Axe Murderer, and Angels in the Outfield. However, one of her best-remembered roles came in 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, in which she portrayed the Central Park Pigeon Lady. Her bond with Macaulay Culkin‘s Kevin McCallister made her a beloved character in the film franchise.

Fricker continued to star in films throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, including A Time to Kill, Painted Angels, The Intended, and more. Her later career focused mostly on film and television work in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Her most recent credits include the Canadian drama series Cam Boy and the British dramas The Catch and The Miracle Club.
In 2025, Fricker gave a rare interview to the Guardian, where she opened up about her recent health struggles. “I’m having a dreadful death. I’m just dying – every day in pain,” she said. “I’ll probably live to be 100.’
Despite her ill health, Fricker’s humor remained intact, telling the outlet that when she’s unable to sleep, she watches The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. “It’s better than sex. It’s better than getting drunk. I just love it,” she said.
