    • Jim Carrey is in talks to return as the title character.
    • Ron Howard is aboard to direct.

Infamous for its stories of Jim Carrey ready to quit the film on day one given how much he hated the make-up, Dr. Seuss adaptation ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ nevertheless became a big hit (see below), and even won an Oscar for that controversial costume.

Now, via The Hollywood Reporter, word arrives that Carrey, along with original director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer are all in talks to return for a sequel.

The original film saw Carrey playing the green meanie who schemes to steal Christmas from the joyful residents of Whoville.

Released just ahead of Thanksgiving in 2000, the live-action ‘Grinch’ was the top movie of the year domestically with $260 million and went on to earn a total of $345 million worldwide.

Plot details for the potential sequel are being kept in a giant red sack for now, but could it go one of the traditional sequel routes and have the Grinch teaming up with the Whos to solve a bigger problem? ‘How the Grinch Saved Easter’ perhaps? Universal, call us!

When will the ‘Grinch’ sequel be on screens?

Since it’s still in development, Universal has yet to set a release date for the new movie.
