The Masked Singer season 8 switched things up by featuring two eliminations per episode, but fans think this ruins the show. For seven seasons, the series would eliminate the contestant that received the least amount of votes from the live studio audience. For the new season, two contestants have been going home each night. Most recently, Gloria Gaynor, who competed as Mermaid, and Mario Cantone, who performed as Maize, were eliminated. The season also introduced a new VIP section for the first eliminated contestant of the night to sit and watch the second eliminated contestant reveal their identity.
While the new format adds a fresh new spin to The Masked Singer, fans wish they would return to the way things used to be. Reddit user DubNationAssemble expressed their frustration saying, “Idk what to make of the format this season.” They also said it seems like it’s become a competition of who can dethrone Harp, who has since moved to the semi-finals after coming in first place for three episodes. “The format is the worst, pretty clearly.” Another fan responded. What fans loved so much about the series was seeing contestants perform and then having some time to put the clues together and guess who they think is behind the mask. With just three contestants performing per night and two going home, they aren’t able to do this.
The Masked Singer Producers Listen To Fan Feedback
However, some fans don’t mind the new format. “I like that it’s allowing celebs with less available time and/or energy to participate,” one The Masked Singer fan shared. Another saw the good and bad, saying they both like and dislike the season. What they enjoy is that if a famous singer is unmasked, instead of performing the song they sang during that episode at the end like they usually do, they’ll sing their most known hit. This occurred with Montell Jordan and Gloria. Unfortunately, most fans don’t like the format at all and are considering not watching the show anymore if things don’t change.
Luckily for fans, The Masked Singer producers are pretty good at taking feedback. Last season, fans were disappointed with the celebrity contestants not being that well known. The Masked Singer season 8 has stepped it up with contestants like Gloria and the stars of The Brady Bunch. Fans also felt the show was getting boring, so for The Masked Singer season 8, they added theme nights to keep things exciting. It’s likely producers are watching fans on social media every week and taking note of what they do and don’t like about the season.
The format definitely does allow celebrities with busy schedules to make time for the show. However, it also doesn’t give them much time to show off their skills. It’s unfair when multiple talented contestants perform during an episode, but only one gets to continue in the competition. It also takes away from fans’ favorite experience of guessing who each contestant is throughout the season. While it’s good that The Masked Singer is keeping things fresh and exciting, they’ll have to rethink the format for season 9 if they want fans to keep tuning in for the series.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8pm EST on Fox.
