Summary
- Velma Dinkley’s detective skills and intelligence make her a worthy addition to Batman’s Family, as one of the many characters to fill the role of Robin.
- Velma’s abilities, including her quick learning in hand-to-hand combat, would make her an invaluable asset to Batman if given access to his tech as Robin.
- The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries comic series offers both wacky and nuanced character moments, with Velma’s potential as Robin being a stroke of genius that should lead to its own spin-off.
The Robin title has gone through many hands, but DC just crowned its most surprising pick yet: Velma Dinkley. While she wasn’t raised by assassins, and isn’t a trained acrobat, her prowess as a detective puts her on a level that Batman can appreciate. When the Dark Knight joins Mystery Inc. on a case, the gang realizes Velma’s right at home alongside the Caped Crusader.
In The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #2 – written by J. Torres, with art by Scott Jeralds, color by Carrie Strachan, and lettering by Saida Temofonte – the Scooby gang run into Solomon Grundy, in the appropriately-named “Slaughter Swamp.” While a fake zombie is up their alley, the real deal is out of their league. Luckily, Batman swings in, already on the case.
While the Caped Crusader and Velma put the pieces together, Fred and Daphne realize their friend might be on another level. Despite his longer vigilante reputation, Batman has an entire family of sidekicks, and Velma would fit right in.
Batman: 10 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up The Bat Family
The Bat Family is comprised of Batman, Robin, and a variety of other superheroes, and these memes perfectly capture their relationships.
While the Mystery Inc. gang work together on all of their cases, Velma is the real brains of the operation. If given access to Batman’s tech as Robin, she would be an invaluable asset to the Dark Knight.
The Scooby Gang’s Velma Would Make An Excellent Robin
While the Mystery Inc. gang work together on all of their cases, Velma is the real brains of the operation. If given access to Batman’s tech as Robin, she would be an invaluable asset to the Dark Knight. She’s not often thought of as an athlete, but there are gags across multiple Scooby-Doo series that show the rest of the team hopping into her arms, as she runs to safety. In What’s New, Scooby-Doo, she held her own in a professional wrestling match, despite having little to no experience, so she’s a quick learner when it comes to hand-to-hand combat.
Velma wouldn’t be the first female Robin, and has traits similar to those who have come before her. Like Stephanie Brown, Velma has a passion for fighting crime, despite her young age. Visually, she’s very similar to Carrie Kelley, who wore green-tinted glasses in lieu of a domino mask during her career as Robin. She also relied on a slingshot and firecrackers to aid her in battle, since she was a 13-year-old with only some gymnastics training. Like both of those girls, Velma isn’t an orphan, but her parents are rarely shown, leaving her free to investigate around Gotham.
Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries Has Sophisticated Character Moments
In its first two issues, The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries has served up wackiness, but also some nuanced character beats. Issue #1 had a heartwarming moment with Nightwing’s dead parents still watching over their boy. Overall, it is a fun series no Batman fan should sleep on. Showing that Velma would make a great Robin is a stroke of genius that practically begs for its own spin-off. DC has crowned a surprising new Robin, and she’s ready to fly. All she needs is a secure pair of glasses. She can’t see a thing without her glasses.
The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #2 is available now from DC Comics.
