Cyndi Lauper teamed up with Sam Smith for a duet of ‘Time After Time’ at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
The pop icon took over the legendary venue on Wednesday (October 30) as part of her ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour’. Lauper kicked off the night with her hit track ‘The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough’ before playing tracks from her career-spanning discography.
Towards the end of her set, Lauper busted out ‘Time After Time’ and brought out Smith as a surprise guest. The ‘Stay With Me’ singer appeared during the second verse. The two held hands and danced while singing that track.
Smith has previously covered Lauper’s 1984 hit back in 2021 in Abbey Road Studios as part of their ‘Love Goes: Live At Abbey Road Studios’ album. ‘Time After Time’ was released as the pop icon’s debut LP ‘She’s So Unusual’. It peaked at Number One and has often been referred to as one of the best songs ever written.
The ‘True Colors’ singer is set to perform at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee tonight (November 1). Her ongoing farewell tour will continue until early December and see the New York singer perform across the US. Visit here for a full list of tour dates and here to purchase tickets.
Back in June, the Lauper opened up to Jimmy Kimmel about the tour and explained why she feels like now’s the right time for one last trek.
While she clarified that she’s by no means retiring, Lauper has ruled out “the trains, planes and automobiles”, suggesting that she’s open to the occasional hometown performance. She explained further: “I want to do an arena tour… I’m strong now, but I don’t know what I’m going to be like in four years.”
Shortly after, Lauper acknowledged her age by getting off her seat to mimic herself using a walker. “For me, I wanted to have a chance to do this when I’m feeling strong. I want to celebrate with people. Really celebrate with people, and make it fun.”
Elsewhere, the eccentric icon recently shared how “terrific” a songwriter she thinks Taylor Swift is.
