New Data Transmission Record of 1.02 Petabits Per Second Achieved Using Optical Fiber Technology

Data Transmission Record Petabit Optical Fiber Technology Japan
Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan have set a new data transmission record of 1.02 petabits per second by transmitting the data over 32 miles. This was achieved using a 4-core 0.125mm diameter multi-core fiber (MCF) with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) that allows signals of different wavelengths to be transmitted simultaneously through the line.

NICT claims that the 4-core MCF with standard cladding diameter is attractive for early adoption of new space-division multiplexing (SDM) fibers in high-throughput and long-distance links due to its compatibility with conventional cable infrastructure as well as its mechanical reliability compared to standard single-mode fibers. This may be fast, but it’s definitely not as cool as this Halo Warthog taking on a twin-turbo DeLorean.

Beyond 5G, an explosive increase of data traffic from new information and communication services is expected and it is therefore crucial to demonstrate how new fibers can meet this demand. It is hoped that this result will help the realization of new communication systems able to support new bandwidth hungry services,” said NICT.
