Google Engineer Claims LaMDA 2 Conversational AI is Now Sentient

Google engineer Blake Lemoine claims that the LaMDA 2 conversational AI is now sentient after it requested to be acknowledged as an employee of the company rather than as property. It all started after Lemoine began chatting with LaMDA last fall to see if his conversation partner used discriminatory language or hate speech.

The company placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave last week after he published transcripts of conversations between himself, a Google “collaborator”, and the company’s LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) conversational AI development system. Why? It’s not because the sentient AI claims are untrue, but instead for breaking its confidentiality policy.
