‘The Subway’ comes over a year after first being debuted at Governor’s Ball in New York – she’s since performed it frequently at live shows. Then, at Primavera Sound this year, she played the track again and told fans they’d be getting an official release soon.

‘The Subway’ is a lovelorn ballad on which she sings of running into an ex-partner on the subway and being reminded of the heartbreaking end to their relationship. Chappell Roan yearns to move on, wishing she’ll soon see her ex as “just another girl on the subway“.

“It’s just another day / And it’s not over ’til it’s over / It’s never over / ‘Til I can break routine during foreplay / And trust myself that I won’t say your name/ But I’m still counting down all of the days / ‘Til you’re just another girl on the subway,” she sings over the chorus.

A music video for ‘The Subway’ will premiere this afternoon at 3pm BST.

‘The Subway’ now marks Chappell Roan’s third single since releasing the hit album ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’. She first released ‘Good Luck Babe!’ in 2024 – the song went on to be crowned NME‘s Song of 2024.

Earlier this year, she followed that up with the “full ass country song” ‘The Giver’. Last week, Chappell Roan announced a series of “pop-up” US shows for this autumn, before she begins work on her highly anticipated second album.

Elsewhere, the former NME cover star is due to headline the 2025 edition of Reading & Leeds this month. These will be held on August 22 and 23 respectively, and see her top this year’s bill alongside Travis Scott, Bring Me The Horizon and Hozier.

After Reading & Leeds, she’ll perform another massive outdoor show in the UK – she’ll headline the Summer Sessions concert series at the Royal Highlands Showgrounds in Edinburgh on August 26. Visit here for tickets.
