If You Use AI to Write Scripts ‘You Shouldn’t Be a Writer’

Don’t expect Seth Rogen to be utilize AI to help with any script writing.

The Studio creator spoke with Brut in an interview published on Thursday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where he shared his opinions on AI. Rogen said that if anyone is thinking about using the technology to help them create a script, they simply “shouldn’t be a writer,” and might want to try out another occupation.

“I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do. Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like, ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is, like, the most stupid dog shit I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said. “And if your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process, you shouldn’t be a writer, because then you’re not writing.”

Rogen also noted that he would never want to find a shortcut to creating a new script because he enjoys the the writing process. “Go do something else. And if you don’t want to go through the process, you shouldn’t be a writer. The idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me, because I like writing,” he said.

AI has already began shifting the entertainment industry. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced updates to its rules and regulations, which included a crack down on the use of AI as it pertains to acting performances that are eligible to receive Oscar nominations.

The four-time Emmy winner attended Cannes in support of Tangles, Leah Nelson’s latest animated feature that features a voice cast of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson, Bryan Cranston, Sarah Silverman, Bowen Yang, Wanda Sykes, Beanie Feldstein and Samira Wiley. Rogen also serves as a producer of the film.
