Hannah Einbinder Makes Climate Change Plea at Critics Choice Awards

When Hannah Einbinder and Michael Urie took the stage at the same time to accept the awards for best supporting actress and actor in a comedy series during the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, they capitalized on the humor of the moment, hilariously talking over one another as they delivered their speeches.

However, both entertainers took a serious moment to address issues of personal importance to them, with Shrinking‘s Urie thanking his parents for openly loving and accepting him and his queer sister, whom he pointed out in the audience, and Einbinder sounding the alarm on the nation’s current climate crisis.

“We are on the brink of a really dark era of climate denial and Chevron scientists knew in the ’70s that plastic recycling was not efficient,” said Einbinder as she began her speech. “They knew that only nine percent of plastic is actually recycled, and even from that nine percent, it’s only recycled one time. The fossil fuel industry is to blame for the climate crisis and they need to pay to clean up the mess that they made.”

Added the actress who stars as Ava in HBO’s Hacks alongside Jean Smart, “I just want to encourage everyone to fight for each other … hopefully we can all use our voices on this issue because planet earth will be fine. It’s humanity that’s in trouble.”

Tonight’s win marks Einbinder’s first Critics Choice Award. She was previously nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy series in 2022. Urie’s award is both his first Critics Choice nomination and win.
