Tim Burton’s Wednesday Addams show overtakes Netflix’s holiday releases and returns to the No. 1 spot in its Top 10 six weeks after its premiere.
Wednesday has returned to its place as the No. 1 TV show on Netflix. The show, a revitalization of The Addams Family in offering a complete reboot that centers around an older version of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), sees the young Addams daughter sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for the outcasts of society, after nearly killing several students at her old school, resulting in her expulsion and court-mandated therapy. There, Wednesday is embroiled in a murder mystery as she tries to get to the bottom of the appearance of a deadly monster and her own uncertain destiny.
Wednesday leapt into the heart of pop culture after taking Netflix by storm. In fact, Wednesday has broken records for Netflix by gathering over 1 billion viewing hours only a month after release, and those viewing hours have only been growing since. Six weeks after its release, it seems that Wednesday only temporarily lost its place as the No. 1 TV show on the platform, as Netflix reports that it has returned to the top spot, even in spite of the releases of The Witcher: Blood Origin, Harry & Meghan, and Emily in Paris season 3.
Why Wednesday Is Back To #1 On Netflix
As a reboot, Wednesday brought with it a hoard of multiple generations of The Addams Family fans with substantial nostalgia for the 1964 show, the 1991 film, and the 2019 animated hit. Besides proving to be a thrilling cinematic success in itself, Wednesday benefits from the surreal draw of The Addams Family, while also having its protagonist be the most relatable member of the family, given that she is younger and involved in typical high school drama. To make the show even more compelling in the age of the DC Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, members of the Addams Family have powers, the presence of which has slowly become a major box office draw.
The fact that the holidays have begun also means that college and high school students also finally have the free time to settle down and watch the show. With its release having come in the middle of the semester, younger viewers may not have had the opportunity to watch the show at all prior to this break, which could have contributed to the sudden rise. The fact that Wednesday has also proven to have staying power also helps it against recent Netflix projects such as The Witcher: Blood Origin, which was horribly timed thanks to the announcement that Henry Cavill will no longer be involved in the franchise. While other shows may break its hold temporarily, Wednesday is strong enough to regularly return to the top as soon as the initial surge dips.
So We’re Definitely Getting Wednesday Season 2, Right?
Of course, given Wednesday‘s success, a season 2 and a few potential spin-off projects centered around The Addams Family are expected. The focus of the spin-offs may be on Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez), Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), or even Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), but it could also center on compelling new characters such as the charming Enid (Emma Myers). As for Wednesday, while it may be difficult to determine where the franchise will go after Wednesday’s expulsion from the Nevermore Academy, the Wednesday season 2 renewal is reportedly coming soon, with reports indicating that it will be arriving early in 2023. At the moment, there is no official word, but after Wednesday proved that The Addams Family is still a striking franchise, there’s no reason to doubt her staying power.
