Pokémon Violet’s latest exclusive Pokémon is Ceruledge, a dark Pokémon design that feels like an Emo teen’s original character from the mid-2000s.
A new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has dropped, revealing new exclusive Pokémon that will be appearing in each game. Pokémon Violet has a new exclusive Pokémon that feels oddly out of place in the colorful and happy Paldea region. In fact, the latest exclusive Pokémon feels like it was designed for emo teens who love making Pokémon OCs.
The Pokémon series has its darker moments, many of which happened during the earliest days of the franchise when the series was still finding its footing, and before it was being developed for an international audience. This includes Pokémon outright being murdered in the Pokémon Adventures manga series, and Sabrina using her mental abilities to punish those who lost to her in the Pokémon anime. The Pokémon franchise’s darkest story moments have been ironed out over time and appear much more sporadically, as the Pokémon franchise is fully aimed at kids around the world.
The Pokémon fanbase has created all manner of fan works over the years, as people have used the setting to tell their own kinds of stories, often the kinds that Game Freak would never approach in a million years. Pokémon has celebrated its 25th anniversary, which means that lots of people were introduced to the franchise as kids and are still fans as adults. Plenty of teens have created fan art of Pokémon that make the series darker and edgier than it currently is, and those fans finally have their cover mascot.
Pokémon Violet’s Ceruledge Is The Edgiest Pokémon Of Them All
The latest Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer has revealed the villain team, the Champion of the Paldea region, and several Gym Leaders, as well as new Pokémon. The official Pokémon website has also been updated with new information. This includes details regarding Ceruledge, one of the new exclusive Pokémon in Pokémon Violet. On the surface, Ceruledge kind of looks like a Mega Man Battle Network character, but that isn’t too much of a stretch for the Pokémon series. It’s more the description of Ceruledge, as well as its Bitter Blade move, that’s raising eyebrows.
“Ceruledge dons an old set of armor steeped in grudges and wields blades made of fire and ghost energy. In battle, these blades transform into great swords to increase Ceruledge’s power. Cuts from these great swords leave wounds from which life energy will flow. (…) Bitter Blade is a Fire-type physical move that gathers the lingering regrets of the fallen into Ceruledge’s swords, allowing it to focus that bitterness into a slashing attack.
The swords then absorb life energy from wounds they made, and the user’s HP is restored by up to half the damage taken by the target.”
Ceruledge might be the closest the Pokémon series has come to creating a full emo teen’s Pokémon OC in the history of the series. Pokédex entries throughout the franchise have included some hints at dark, creepy Pokémon backstories, such as Froslass making corpse museums, but that is relegated to subtle mentions that could be considered apocryphal information. Having a Pokémon who wields the power of bitterness to inflict wounds that drain life energy feels like something more befitting a Sonic the Hedgehog OC that a new character in the Pokémon series.
