The co-showrunner of Perry Mason offers an update on season 3 after that big finale. In the second installment of the HBO drama, which is based on the character created by Erle Stanley Gardner, and which takes place in the 1930s, Matthews Rhys returns in the title role. Consisting of eight episodes, Perry Mason season 2 focuses on the death of a notable society figure. When the district attorney places the blame on the most obvious and ostracized suspects, Mason and his team work together and slowly uncover a wide-reaching conspiracy.
In an interview with TVLine, following the conclusion of Perry Mason season 2, co-showrunner Michael Begler addressed the drama’s future. Perry Mason has not been renewed, but Begler struck an optimistic tone and noted that “there’s so much story to tell with these characters.” Begler, who serves as showrunner alongside Jack Amiel, also gave a general update on when HBO might make a decision about whether the series will return:
Look, I’ve been thinking about a Season 3 since they called wrap. Even before that. I would love the opportunity. I think that there’s so much story to tell with these characters. I think we just started to tell the story with these characters. So yeah, I have lots of stories that I’m thinking on. But it’s not up to us, unfortunately. It’s up to the gods at HBO. I think we’ll know sooner than later, and hopefully, we will get to continue.
How Perry Mason Can Continue Reinventing Itself In Season 3
Perry Mason season 2 was met with critical acclaim. Based on 27 reviews, the HBO Original has an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The concise mentions that the show’s second outing is more “cohesive” and satisfying on the whole, with particular praise going to the performances of the cast. But part of the reason for the shift is that the writers leaned in with the courtroom aspects, rather than pulling away from it, and there was a lot of room to see what it was that made Mason so unique at his job.
And even with some changes in the ensemble, the Perry Mason cast delivered. Rhys excelled in his portrayal of a man that was still haunted by his previous case, making him reluctant to embark on something as high-profile as a murder trial. Juliet Rylance as Della Street and Chris Chalk as Paul Drake also leave an impression with deeper examinations of their complicated personal lives.
Perry Mason season 3 could jump forward in time or tackle an even bigger court case. With some new faces likely to appear, and the writers already working on ideas, all the pieces are in place for the show’s continued evolution. And based on recent remarks, hopefully, HBO will announce its decision regarding the legal reboot soon.
