Elimination and Express Pass Users, Revealed

The Amazing Race Season 39 continued with another episode on October 1. This time, the remaining 12 teams jetted from Vancouver, Canada, to Madrid, Spain. They all ended up on the same flight to Europe, so they were on even playing ground once they got to their next destination.

Everyone also took the same Metro to Plaza de Toros in Batán. Once there, one member of each team took part in the Roadblock, which was followed by a Detour that some teams struggled with.

Although Phil Keoghan noted that the last-place team may be eliminated from the race, it was over for the pair that made it to the Pit Stop last. Scroll down for a recap of everything that went down!

What was the Roadblock in Episode 2?

The Roadblock required one person from each team to search for a clue in a huge pile of tomatoes, while also being pelted with tomatoes from people on the outside of the circle.

Erin Taylor and Javi Vintimillia were first to finish and got on the first train at the Metro, but they ended up going the wrong way. Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman, along with Dafina Dunmore and Saran Dunmore, finished right behind the married couple, but got on the right train to the next stop at Puerta del Sol.

The teams slowly began finishing until there were just two left. Jody Rebhun and Jenn Naso were next to complete the task, followed by Katie Schultz and Charlotte Schultz in last place. Katie and Charlotte then fell even farther behind when they got on the Metro going in the wrong direction.

What was the Detour in Episode 2?

At the Detour, the teams had the option of partaking in a “Taste of Ham” or a “Taste of History.” The former required the contestants to carry a leg of ham across the city to a restaurant, then correctly carve 50 grams of ham while their partner made a charcuterie board that looked just like the example. The latter required the players to find lookalikes of 12 Spanish icons scattered around a plaza, then match their names with the correct picture on a game board after only hearing of their greatest accomplishments.

Ali/Joanna, Erin/Javi, Anuar Tager/Andrea Tager Ballesca, Ann-Marie Tejcek/Riley Tejcek, Daisha Wilks/Dalton Hamby,  Doug Matter/Dylan Matter, Cody Langlois/Jaime Tribo, and Garrett McGuire/Conner Wilson all chose to Taste of Ham. The issue was that there were only six workstations available to use at a time.

Dafina and Saran were first to arrive at the Taste of History, but they really struggled. Michelle Patterson and Matthew Patterson, meanwhile, were able to finish it on their first try. Jody and Jenn knew they were far behind when they arrived at the task, but with Jody being a European history teacher, she was confident she could figure it out quickly. Katie and Charlotte also opted for Taste of History once they arrived.

Who used Express Passes in Episode 2?

The first Express Pass was used by Dalton and Daisha at the Roadblock. After nine teams had successfully completed the task, Dalton grew worried they were going to fall too far behind, so they pulled out the Express Pass. Daisha, on the other hand, was annoyed that her boyfriend gave up.

Meanwhile, Cody and Jaime used their Express Pass when they arrived at the Taste of Ham detour and saw all six stations were already in use. Rather than wait around for one to open up, they bypassed the task and headed to the Pit Stop. Dylan and Doug, on the other hand, fell very far behind after getting lost on their way to the Detour, but it worked somewhat in their favor, as stations were available once they finally arrived.

Although Jody was certain that she would nail the Taste of History challenge, Jenn was worried when she saw Saran and Dafina talking to pedestrians in the plaza. Thinking that the sisters had completed the task and were asking for directions to the next location, Jenn urged Jody to play the Express Pass, and they moved on.

It turned out, though, that Saran and Dafina were actually just asking the pedestrians to look up information  for them that would help with the Detour task. It came down to a race between them and Katie/Charlotte to finish first.

Who was eliminated in Episode 2?

Ultimately, Charlotte and Katie weren’t able to catch up. They were the last team to arrive at the Pit Stop and were eliminated from the race.

Ali and Joanna finished this leg in first, followed by Michelle and Matt in second, Cody and Jaime in third, and Ann-Marie and Riley in fourth. Thanks to their Express Pass, Jody and Jenn came in fifth, followed by Daisha and Dalton in sixth, Erin and Javi in seventh, Anuar and Andrea in eighth, and Conner and Garrett right behind them in ninth.

Despite their setbacks, Dylan and Doug came in tenth, with Saran and Dafina eking out eleventh place.
