Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 7-21-25 suggest a major health crisis is on the horizon.
I’m more excited about this than about the fallout from it, especially after learning where this story is headed.
Still, health crises are a soap staple, and the emotional aspects of this story should be strong… even if it is leading up to a twist I am not looking forward to.

Marlena’s Collapse Has Been Coming For A While
Even though Marlena’s labs came back completely normal, I knew there had to be something more to her dizzy spells.
There would be no point in setting up the story otherwise.
The most likely explanation, of course, is grief over John’s death. Marlena hasn’t been eating or sleeping regularly, which can cause dizziness.
Of course, this problem should be reflected somewhere in her blood work.
Shouldn’t she have extra cortisol in her system, low blood sugar, or other physiological signs of the real culprit?
Mysterious illnesses work differently in Salem, though, and are often paired with supernatural weirdness, so I’ll do my best to overlook that aspect of the story.

The Early Stages Of This Story Will Be Better Than Where It’s Going
Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 7-21-25 suggest that Marlena’s collapse comes after a long week at work, followed by attending the beginning of Johnny’s trial.
Plus, no one’s told Marlena that Ari is missing because they don’t want to add any more stress while she’s dealing with John’s death.
Stress and burnout can definitely contribute to her symptoms, and it will be scary for her and the audience when she finally collapses, especially since she’s had several similar incidents without losing consciousness.
I’m also excited about this part of the story because I’ve been working on a fanfiction plot about Marlena dealing with a mystery illness, so I’m eager to check out the real Days of Our Lives’ version.

Sadly, Marlena’s Illness Will Morph Into More Supernatural Weirdness
Unfortunately, summer spoilers for Days of Our Lives suggest that Marlena’s illness will lead to yet another out-of-body sequence, putting Marlena face-to-face with an old enemy: Stefano.
This idea has several strikes against it. The supernatural stuff is far too prevalent on Days of Our Lives, and I had high hopes the newest writing team would tone that kind of nonsense way down.
Why can’t an illness story ever be medical-based, especially when Marlena is involved?
That awful redux of the devil possession story began with Doug’s seeming dementia turning out to be a case of devil possession.
The writers threw away what could have been a very moving story for absolute nonsense, even if Bill Hayes getting to play the devil toward the end of his long life and career was a milestone moment for him.
It’s not the first time, either.

Marlena going into a coma and Belle having to decide whether to honor her advance directive turned into silliness about switching Marlena with Hattie, and Abe’s traumatic brain injury became that ridiculous Whitley story where amnesiac Abe thought Whitley was Paulina.
This story is even worse than those because Marlena supposedly dreams about being Stefano’s Queen of the Night.
Stefano was an iconic villain who supposedly never stayed dead for long, so the impulse to resurrect him now is understandable.

However, Joe Mascolo died in 2016, and the last time he was on camera was disturbingly close to exploitation of a man with dementia.
Mascolo sat in a cage, seemingly unaware of his surroundings, and the appearance only added to the disrespect by revealing that Shane had disguised himself as Stefano for some purpose I no longer recall.

All of that was disrespectful enough, but now it appears Days of Our Lives is considering recasting Stefano.
The only silver lining in this idea is that Mascolo reportedly said that he wanted the role recast if he could no longer play it. If true, this would be honoring his final wishes in some way.
However, the optics are terrible, especially considering the bad taste Mascolo’s final appearance left in many fans’ mouths.
Additionally, it makes little sense from a story perspective.
The giant portrait of Stefano in the DiMera living room has become as iconic as Stefano DiMera himself, with many characters speaking to it to appease their guilt, convince themselves they’re doing his bidding, or pretend they’re getting advice from Stefano.
This prop has become so ubiquitous that the show created a similar portrait for Victor after John Aniston died.
Resurrecting Stefano now would mean creating a story that makes no sense, ruining Marlena’s illness story, and further disrespecting Joe Mascolo’s legacy… all for something few fans are asking for.

Will Marlena’s Collapse Be The Biggest Aspect of Johnny’s Trial This Week?
Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 7-21-25 also indicate that Johnny’s trial will continue, which is why I think stress is a significant reason for Marlena’s collapse.
Not much else is going on with the trial yet, though Marlena will hypnotize EJ — who will probably make up nonsense while under hypnosis. If Ava could keep her returned memories to herself, EJ certainly can!
This trial is already something that could only happen in Salem, with the defendant’s father (who is also the victim) acting as his attorney and somehow getting a judge to demand that the defense attorney’s girlfriend take the prosecutor’s role.
The value of this story lies mainly in guessing how far removed it will become from reality.

Other Days of Our Lives Spoilers For The Week of 7-21-25
There are quite a few other things going on this week:
- Doug III will leave town after Ari and Holly are finally rescued. First, the women will confront him, and he will visit Julie to say goodbye. I think I may be the only fan out there who didn’t hate Doug III, but I’m disappointed. I wanted a redemption arc for him, not this nonsense.
- Sophia tells Tate that she already had the baby. I don’t think it makes sense for Tate to run to Chicago in search of her while Holly is missing, but he has to confront Sophia soon.
- Gwen insinuates to Gabi that both Stefan and Dmitri are missing in action. I am still not convinced that there was any good reason for Gwen to return to Salem. Gabi could also have a more compelling story than this.
