What are the worst books of all time? Before we can answer that, I must first ask: are there really such things as “bad” books? I try to abide by two of the laws of library science, as introduced by S.R. Ranganathan in 1931: every reader their book, every book its reader. There are no terrible books, just terrible mismatches of reader and book, right? Well… let’s just say there are authors bent on testing anyone trying to live within these laws.
Lists of the worst books of all time are so fascinating to me. Namely because bad is so different from forgettable. Most books that fail to reach the status of “good” fade into obscurity. Most “good” books do too, for that matter. Take His Family by Ernest Poole. It won the Pulitzer Prize yet has a paltry 217 reviews on Goodreads. The New York Public Library has two copies of it. They’re in offsite storage though, so you have to make a special request to access them. Libraries can rescue countless cultural artifacts from total oblivion. Even still, forgetting is the natural order of both good and not-so-good things. So the books that are bad enough to remember are rare birds indeed.
As I said when I wrote about quitting bad books, the worst books are good at one thing: eliciting emotion from readers. Those emotions are typically anger and disgust, but there’s more to them than that, as we’ll see. In an effort to understand what makes a book an all-time worst, I took a tumble from the tree of books. I hit every bad branch on the way down. And some patterns emerged from the bruises.
A Prelude: Bad Prose
I confess that when someone tells me a book is “badly written,” I have to keep from rolling my eyes. That phrase is so vague as to be useless. Plus, these things are often a matter of taste. One person’s purple prose is another’s lush styling. Fascinating digressions vs. pointless asides. You get it. But the prose in the worst books of all time bears some trademark sins. It’ll rankle even the most accepting of readers. On the whole, you can rely on these books to exhibit cliches and stereotypes and show overuse of the thesaurus. Poorly-conceived ideas never cohere into something cogent, and lackluster editing fails to tighten up clumsy wording. But identifying these metrics of bad writing isn’t especially illuminating. We need to look deeper.
Breaking Bad
Unfortunately for authors, one of the ways to have a title labeled as one of the worst books of all time is to write some good books first. Take Ernest Hemingway. If he hadn’t written A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls, perhaps his 1950 novel Across the River and into the Trees would have quietly slipped past readers. Instead, it was roundly criticized for, among other things, reading like a parody of Hemingway’s ruthlessly pared-down prose. But Papa came back swinging in 1952 with The Old Man and the Sea. With that novella, he proved wrong haters like critic Philip Rahv who declared his career over.
Other acclaimed writers have met a similar fate. Dracula author Bram Stoker’s 1911 novel The Lair of the White Worm is inspired by the Lambton Worm, a legendary English monster. They’ve read quite a number of the worst books of all time, in fact.
If you’ve read William Makepeace Thackery’s Victorian classic Vanity Fair and are looking to dig into his bibliography, you might want to skip The Virginians. In Studies in Fiction and History from Austen to Le Carre, English professor John Halperin called it “arguably the worst book ever produced by a great novelist.” Heavy is the head that wears the crown! But authors can definitely make the list of the worst books of all time without doing anything good. Like, anything.
Reprehensible content
I don’t want to dwell on this section too much. But there are certainly books that have earned their rotten reputation because of offensive content. I don’t have to tell you that Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf is a terrible book. Though I will note that beyond its general odiousness, it’s been said that its cliches, bombastic ideas, and muddled prose render it unreadable.
A plethora of books contain racist tropes that go unchallenged and unexamined by their authors. Some, however, get called out for being especially egregious. Among them are Nelson Hayes’s Dildo Cay (I mean, the title alone), about white enslavers at a Caribbean salt mine. Also Victoria Foyt’s Save the Pearls: Revealing Eden, a post-apocalyptic book pitting light-skinned and dark-skinned people against each other. Yikes.
Likewise, there are truly so many misogynistic books out there. Pickup artist Joe Bovino’s Field Guide to Chicks of the United States paints a vivid portrait of a man to avoid at all costs. Offending religious beliefs is another route authors can take. Nicolas Cage, star of the dreadful Left Behind film adaptation, might consider doing penance for his cinematic crime by National Treasure-style stealing every copy of Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins’ book series chronicling the end times. These books offend many Christians who claim they misrepresent theology. Non-Christians take issue with their outright hostility toward other faiths. Lest I dwell on these bad books too long, let’s move along.
Sex and romance
Here’s where I take issue with a certain kind of book that frequently pops up on worst book lists. You’ll often find Twilight and its fanfic bizzaro world twin Fifty Shades of Grey among the worst books of all time. Listen. I’m not here to say these are good books. But the worst books of all time? YA vampire novels that depict less than healthy relationship dynamics and billionaire romances with inexpertly written BDSM content are truly a dime a dozen. How did these particular books get swept up in the zeitgeist? That’s the secret code authors and publishers are always trying to crack, but the backlash against them seems disproportionate. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. My favorite bad book podcasters from The Worst Bestsellers have become reluctant defenders of overly maligned books like Twilight. They save their scorn for the truly soul-crushing books out there.
While Twilight and Fifty Shades are relatively recent, there’s nothing new about railing against sex and romance in books. Sex-and-drug-fueled Valley of the Dolls (1966) is considered among the worst books, as is Judith Krantz’s glamorous smut Dazzle (1990). Bad reviews claiming these books are “trashy” only fuel raccoons like me who then reach for them with nimble fingers. Also, these kinds of trashy books get swept up in moral panics that have real consequences. Forever Amber, a 1944 historical novel with lots of sex by the standards of the day, was banned in 14 states as pornography.

Stay in Your Lane (Or Maybe Just Exit the Highway)
Yet another way to end up on bad book lists is to make a name for yourself in one field and then fancy yourself a writer. Sean Penn’s overly alliterative political-satire-cum-serial-killer-novel Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff has very few defenders, though Salman Rushdie is curiously among them. In depressing evidence of how publishing works, Penn did write a sequel despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews.
Many fans of The Smiths struggle to square their love of the music with frontman Morrissey’s political opinions. He’s become increasingly troubling for those who appreciated the band’s original anti-capitalist, anti-elite ethos. But basically everyone struggles with Morrissey’s 2015 novel List of the Lost, which received many scathing reviews and the inglorious “Bad Sex in Fiction Award.”
Speaking of bad political opinions, Boris Johnson compiled his columns for GQ in Life in the Fast Lane: The Johnson Guide to Cars. It’s not just that he’s “the world’s worst car journalist,” as website carkeys.co.uk proclaimed. The book is also rife with racism and sexism that ought to surprise no one at all. So let’s find another category of bad book, one that’s a little more fun.
So Bad It’s Good?
The absolute best way to end up on a bad book list, if you ask me, is to try so hard to write a good book that you accidentally write the best worst book instead. Anyone who’s ever been a part of a dramatic reading of the infamously bad fanfic My Immortal is tapping into the old tradition of communally reading unintentionally hilarious writing.
There have been contests to see who can read aloud from famously bad books, like Amanda McKittrick Ros’s 1897 romantic drama Irene Iddesleigh and Jim Theis’s 1970 fantasy novella The Eye of Argon, without laughing. Both of these works contain tortured prose that challenges the stoniest of faces. Give them a try at your next bookish get-together.
And if you like bad poetry, William McGonagall: Collected Poems rounds up the doggerel originally published in broadsides and newspapers by William McGonagall between 1877 and 1902. If you’ve never thought you had an ear for poetry, don’t let that stop you. McGonagall sure didn’t. He suffered for his art, too, dodging the rotten fruit lobbed at him at readings. His poem on the Tay Bridge disaster needs to be read in full to appreciate the depth of badness it plumbs.

I think a lot about artistic endeavors as attempts to achieve immortality. In a true monkey’s paw scenario, some of these authors didn’t gain the kind of immortality they were probably hoping for. There’s a good “would you rather” question in all of this. Would you rather write a book that is utterly forgotten within your lifetime, or one that outlives you for being famously bad? I’m at peace with being a mere blip on the cosmic timeline, but hats off to those who don’t feel the same. I’ll continue to be fascinated by glorious achievements and horrifying train wrecks alike.
