As we mark one year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the effects of that decision can’t be overstated. Over the last year, those needing abortions, pregnancy care, and their providers have been unconscionably harmed. And now, in order to move forward, we must look back and acknowledge how trying to save Roe became a fool’s errand. Until those who support abortion rights reckon with the compromises that the Roe framework created and stop white-washing history, we’ll never build a just and equitable future. We—and I include myself in this group—need to name and own how a white…

Ever since The Walking Dead wrapped its 11-season run on AMC, the franchise has promised to expand some more thanks to countless spinoffs. The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 launched on June 18, and the early numbers are encouraging. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Old Acquaintances” managed 683,000 viewers in its linear airing on AMC. With simulcasts on AMC Networks cable channels and replays, the number rose to 1.12 million viewers. While these numbers are way down from the original series’ heyday, it is an improvement on the premieres of Interview With the Vampire (622,000 viewers), Mayfair Witches (577,000),…
Wherever you are right now, take a quick look around at people’s footwear. What brands are they wearing? Chances are, the results of your visual sneaker survey will look a little something like this: Adidas, Nike, Converse, New Balance, Nike, maybe a bit of Reebok if you’re lucky, Adidas, Nike, Nike.No matter how classic the shoe or how exclusive the drop, it’s clear that just a few companies have a monopoly on the sneaker market. So what are you supposed to do if you don’t want to follow in the air-cushioned footsteps of everyone else? Thankfully, there are plenty of…
I feel the recognition in my bones when I read the opening line of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel The Sympathizer: “I am a spy, a sleeper, a spook, a man of two faces.” When I write in English, I feel like I’m lying. I am making up every waking thought I had since childhood, in a language that I did not grow up dreaming in. And yet, I feel the constellation of letters tickle at my senses, rebuilding a life reimagined in English. For instance, I do remember this being true: waking up in the first house I lived in,…

Glacier surfaces in certain parts of the world contain concerning amounts of toxic radioactive materials, a result of weapons testing and nuclear accidents such as the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Fallout radionuclides accumulate within cryoconite – a granular sediment found in holes on glacier surfaces – and there is a risk of this material entering local ecosystems as glaciers melt due to climate change. Glaciologists and ecologists say this poses urgent questions. What regions are at highest risk? How diluted is the nuclear material entering proglacial zones? What impact might that have on organisms? Find out more about this emerging…
In-theater advertising firm National CineMedia announced a special shareholders meeting to vote on a reverse stock split — a move that boosts the price of a company’s shares — as it risks being delisted by the Nasdaq market and works through a voluntary Chapter 11 reorganization. The company, which was founded and is largely owned by the nation’s largest exhibitors, announced its plans in an SEC filing that, however, didn’t include the date for the 2023 meeting yet, or the terms of the reverse split. Those details will come, with “the exact ratio to be determined by the Board of…
WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration has started to reduce the amount of airspace it closes for launches from Cape Canaveral as part of efforts to limit the impact of growing launch activity on commercial aviation. The FAA recently introduced a revised zone of restricted airspace around and extending offshore for many launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and the Kennedy Space Center. The revised zone keeps open airspace to the north of the spaceports that had previously been closed for all launches. By doing so, the FAA said in a June 15 statement, it keeps open a key…
WhatsApp is rolling out a feature designed to protect users from unwanted calls on the messaging platform. The Meta-owned app will allow users to simply toggle a setting that will silence calls from spam and nuisance callers. These calls typically come from numbers that are not part of a user’s contact list, and the new feature is designed to prevent calls from unknown numbers from disturbing the user. WhatsApp users who do not enable this setting will hear their phone ring when any other WhatsApp user — including those not in their contact list — calls them using the app.On Tuesday,…

A 30-year-old Indian woman named Eshita Kabra-Davies is speaking before a rapt audience at the United Nations. She has long amber hair and is wearing an olive green maxi dress, and leans into the microphone with forward-forcing energy, like it’s the top frame of a Peloton. Speaking with steely calm, Kabra-Davies touches on the impact of single-use plastic on the Global South, the importance of female-led enterprises to uplift global economies, and the shock of seeing fast fashion landfills mar the dunes of Rajasthan. Near the end of her time at the podium, she stares down the room of CEOs…
Netflix is switching things up to provide more clarity to consumers about which of its shows are resonating with viewers. In the past, Netflix has focused on the total hours watched for its movies and TV series, but now, the streaming service will rank these projects based on the number of views. To get that number, the number of hours watched will now be divided by the runtime, which gives a more level playing field because some shows have dominated based on having more episodes alone. To that end, Netflix will continue to show hours viewed per title, but the…
Let’s say you’re a seasoned traveler with a borderline obscene amount of passport stamps and airline miles. Regardless of your travel pedigree, you owe it to yourself to take a trip through this list of the best leather duffle bags known to man. And woman. And spoiled toy-breed dogs. In the first few pages of Helen Elaine Lee’s Pomegranate, protagonist Ranita recalls a moment when her father gives her the titular fruit. She breaks the pomegranate open, “awed by the wild design of it…a whole world, strange and crazy-beautiful, underneath the skin.” In many ways, this scene serves as a metaphor for the novel itself; it is, on the surface, about Ranita being released from prison, working to reunite with her children, trying to understand her queerness, and maintaining her sobriety, but the story is ripe with so much more. Through alternating past tense sections written in third person…
Photo by JR P / FlickrIn her new essay collection, These Particular Women (Sagging Meniscus Press, 2023), Kat Meads writes about famous twentieth-century women, mostly authors. In this short excerpt, she ventures into Flannery O’Connor territory. It had been a rainy night in Georgia, and there followed a rainy day. Four miles north of Milledgeville proper and directly across from the Super Inn & Suites, the modest, close-to-earth sign that marked the entrance to Flannery O’Connor’s Andalusia wasn’t easy to spot and required, in response, a hard swerve left across two lanes of oncoming traffic. A narrow dirt road threaded through…
