Investigation Discovery is delving into the history of one of America’s most fascinating serial killer stories. Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos will use digital replication and VFX technology to re-examine the crimes of Wuornos, the infamous female serial killer whose story became Hollywood legend in Monster.

The three-part series will premiere on Wednesday, September 30, on ID, starting at 8/7c. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
What is Unmasking a Monster about?
Per the official description, “The three-part docuseries uses advanced digital replication and VFX techniques to revisit the life, crimes, and eventual capture of Aileen Wuornos. Introducing a new visual approach to true crime storytelling, Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos presents next-generation visualizations of documented first-person accounts from Wuornos, those close to her, and the investigators who worked the case, accounts previously available only in verified transcripts, documented evidence, and chronicled firsthand testimony.”
What else is there to know about Unmasking a Monster?
ID also revealed that the VFX artists worked to create the likeness of Aileen Wuornos using historic documents with a three-dimensional layer and an actress, Morag Peacock, performing the vocals and movements of the subject. The docuseries took three years and over 100 crew members to produce.
ID said of the production, “The technology was used exclusively for the series’ visual presentation. The writing and narrative were based entirely on verified transcripts, documented evidence, and firsthand accounts. The series is grounded in factual record and enhanced through technology. Additionally, this technology is not meant to create instances that did not take place nor rewrite Wuornos’ history, rather it is giving viewers the opportunity to see moments that are integral to both her story and the investigation that would not have been able to be visualized or seen previously.”‘
The network also notes that those subjects who were digitally replicated were informed and consented, and families of the victims were briefed about the production as well.
“Decades after her crimes, there are still questions about who Aileen Wuornos was, how investigators ultimately captured her, and the perspectives of the people who lived through those events. Unmasking is supported by an extraordinary volume of verified source material, so documented accounts help audiences better understand what shaped one of the most infamous serial killers in modern history,” ID revealed.
